About

The Virtual Side Event of the G20 Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Working Group, is hosted by the Brazilian Presidency, focused on leveraging cell broadcast dissemination for early warning systems. Highlighting the critical role of early warnings in saving lives and reducing disaster-related mortality, the event will emphasize the importance of universal early warning system coverage. It will underscore the significance of cell broadcast technology in swiftly disseminating critical information to a broad audience, especially vulnerable populations, without relying on internet connectivity.

Brazil plans to implement a program to send "pop-up" text messages to phones near at-risk regions. The event aims to promote experience sharing among G20 Member States, advance global prioritization of alerts for universal accessibility, accelerate action towards the UN Secretary-General’s Early Warnings for All initiative, and improve financing approaches for leveraging cell broadcast technology in early warning systems.
