Pakistan has shown immense resilience in the face of devastating natural disasters and crippling emergencies, time and time again. Eleven years from the horrible earthquake in 2005 that took thousands of lives, the Government of Pakistan has declared that tragic day, 8th October, as the National Disaster Awareness Day to sensitive communities to learn from disasters.

Pakistan added detailed seismic provisions to its national building code in 2007, two years after an earthquake in the disputed Kashmir region killed more than 80,000 people and destroyed countless constructions.

This case study presents the highlights of the post-earthquake reconstruction process. It outlines the decision-making processes in recovery planning and extracts best practices and key lessons learned from the experience.
