The program of the 5th Symposium, including field trips and discussion groups as well as plenary and targeted sessions, will appeal to people from all disciplines and sectors (private, academia, government, community, and voluntary agencies) and working at local, national and international levels. CRHNet brings together everyone who has an interest in the cross sectoral, multiple dimensions of risk management and disaster reduction. CRHNet and the 5 th Symposium emphasize an interdisciplinary approach that will reach out to everyone with interests in risk mitigation and management.

Each day of the Symposium will begin with a plenary session featuring a distinguished guest speaker who will present on one of the key sub-themes identified below. A final plenary session will conclude the Symposium and will focus on partnerships and future directions in disaster risk reduction in Canada.

The Symposium will draw topics from three distinct aspects of risk and hazards management and emergency management:

Physical Science: sessions relating to the physical aspects of hazards, the processes that generate hazardous impacts and appropriate physical mitigation solutions.

Social Science: sessions relating to the socioeconomic aspects of hazards, vulnerability and socially oriented mitigation solutions.

Governance, Policy, and Management: sessions relating to the development and implementation of emergency management programs. This will include legal and jurisdictional issues, program models, and post-event analysis of a community's response and recovery to recent events.

Abstracts on a broad range of topics related to risk and hazards are encouraged. Themes to be addressed include:

· risk knowledge, practice, policy, and partnerships
· case studies
· emergency management
· health and risk management
· engineering and risk management
· risk reduction and adaptation to climate and weather
· marine hazards, risks, and security
· risks and hazards in coastal environments
· risks and hazards in northern environments
· community planning, preparation, and response
· international perspectives on risk management and disaster risk reduction.
