Previous ARSET trainings focused on water resources have mainly addressed remote sensing measurements of precipitation and their applications. But precipitation is only one component of the water cycle. NASA's Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) Satellite Mission is now providing new soil moisture data, and modeling frameworks are providing new evapotranspiration data.

NASA ARSET (Applied Remote Sensing Training Program) is offering its first webinar series focused exclusively on soil moisture and evapotranspiration. This webinar series will help attendees learn about NASA soil moisture and evapotranspiration products and how to access and apply them for water resource management and decision making to mitigate drought.

What's Included

Over the course of five weeks, attendees will learn how to monitor and manage water resources with techniques learned in training. The series will begin with an introduction to satellite missions and useful data sets. Next, trainers will demonstrate online portals for accessing data. The series will conclude with specific examples of how you can apply the data and modeled data products.

This webinar series will consist of five 1 hour sessions every Thursday in September at 11:30 AM EDT Eastern Daylight Time (UTC-4) and 6:00 PM (EDT) Eastern Daylight Time (UTC-4). Each weekly session will be held two times a day to allow for international participation from different times zones

Participants will learn about NASA Earth observation resources (data and tools) available for water resource applications, including: a basic understanding of how evapotranspiration and soil moisture are included in the water cycle and how to access and visualize these data products.

Participants will also become familiar with a number of modeled datasets and techniques for using NASA Earth Science data for water resource management.

Course Format

  • Five one-hour sessions, held from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. and 6:00-7:00 p.m. EDT (UTC-4) (Daily sessions are presented twice per day to allow for international participation)
    • Convert to your local time
  • One session per week
  • Sessions will be held every Thursday, September 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29

Intended Audience

The training is targeted at local, regional, state, federal, and international organizations interested in using satellite imagery for decision and policy-making activities.

How to Register

This webinar series is free, but you must register below. Space is limited, and preference will be given to organizations listed above over organizations focused primarily on research. You will be notified by email if your registration has been approved on or before August 31, 2016. Please only register for the session that works best for your time zone.
