Breaking down barriers to meaningful youth engagement in DRR on the African Continent

Africa, south of the Sahara's disaster profile is closely linked to the vulnerability of its population and its developing economies. To make the matter worse, most African countries are resource deficient and so are not able to effectively invest in a holistic disaster risk reduction strategy. However, a resource that Africa has in abundance is its young people.  According to the United Nations, three-quarters of the total population of Africa are under the age of 35 years. This 'youth' resource can be harnessed to strengthen the resilience of the African population and increase its coping capacities.

Until recently, just before the establishment of the Africa Youth Advisory Board for Disaster Risk Reduction (AYAB DRR) was formed under the African Union Commission (AUC), youth engagement could be described as 'tokenistic' and young Africans faced many barriers to being meaningfully engaged in DRR on the African Continent. Since its inception, AYAB has been identifying these barriers and finding ways these barriers could be broken down to achieve meaningful youth engagement in DRR on the African Continent. 

This Webinar is to share the lessons learnt so far and brainstorm new ideas on the way forward in breaking down barriers to meaningful youth engagement in DRR on the African Continent. Thus, the webinar is targeted at all stakeholders in DRR on the African continent.
