The G20 Global Land Initiative Coordination Officeof the UN Convention to Combat Desertification proudly presents this edition of BBL, the sixth in the series, is proudly presented in collaboration with the Partnership for Environment and Disaster Risk Reduction (PEDRR).

Formally established in 2008, the Partnership for Environment and Disaster Risk Reduction (PEDRR) is a global alliance of UN agencies, NGOs, and specialist institutes striving to promote and scale-up implementation of Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction (Eco-DRR) where PEDRR partners strive to collectively implement planned initiatives and activities. This year marks PEDRR’s 15th anniversary in helping advocate for increasing investments in Ecosystem-based Approaches to reducing disaster- and climate risks.

This BBL event delves into the transformation of disaster management over the past 15 years, highlighting its evolution from a primary emphasis on emergency response to a renewed focus on building disaster resilience. It explores the profound impact of climate change in reshaping the realm of disasters, prompting a reevaluation of strategies and preparedness measures. The event addresses how the global community can proactively equip itself with the necessary tools and strategies to enhance resilience in these evolving challenges.

Background

In an ever-changing world, the landscape of disaster management has evolved remarkably over the past 15 years. The journey of disaster management, historically emphasizing reactive emergency response, has shifted towards a renewed and proactive focus on building disaster resilience. This shift is emblematic of a broader recognition within the global community that preventing, mitigating, and adapting to disasters are paramount to safeguarding both human and environmental well-being.

Climate change has played a pivotal role in redefining disaster management. Climate change has acted as a catalyst, ushering in heightened vulnerability and uncertainty, necessitating a fundamental reevaluation of disaster management strategies and preparedness measures.

The BBL-6 event will serve as a platform for exploring these shifts in disaster management. It will bring together experts, practitioners, policymakers, and stakeholders to engage in insightful discussions, share experiences, and chart a path forward. The event's overarching objective is to contemplate how the global community can proactively equip itself with the necessary tools, strategies, and partnerships to enhance resilience in these evolving challenges. The BBL-6 underscores the importance of building bridges – not only between sectors and stakeholders but also between the past and the future of disaster management.
