The City of Cape Town has partnered with the Provincial Department of Local Government and the National Department of Cooperative Governance to organise, fund and participate in the three-day United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) 2011 Campaign: ‘Making Cities Resilient – Cape Town is Getting Ready’.

The campaign will run from Monday 10 October until Wednesday 12 October 2011.

This United Nations campaign seeks to promote the establishment of Disaster Management Centres at a local government level to support disaster risk reduction initiatives and to coordinate the management of disaster response teams.

The UNISDR campaign for the period 2010 – 2011 will see its partners in all cities and local governments around the world working to reduce possible risks and become resilient to disasters.

Details of the campaign are as follows:

Day 1 – Official launch of City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre

The official launch of the City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre highlights the importance of establishing a state-of-the-art centre to achieve one of the City’s crucial strategic goals, namely: a safe and secure city. The centre, situated in Goodwood, has been upgraded and provided with the latest technology to manage major emergency incidents or disasters that could occur in Cape Town.

Date: Monday 10 October
Time: 10:00
Venue: Engine Room, Goodwood Fire Station, c/o Hugo and Frans Conradie Streets, Goodwood

Day 2 – Media briefing and Educational Workshop

A media briefing will be held to showcase a range of disaster risk reduction legacy projects that will be launched and funded by the Provincial Government of the Western Cape’s Disaster Management Centre, in support of the City. These projects will reach out to learners in primary schools to create awareness and teach them about climate change and smart living, while also supporting disaster risk reduction education programmes in schools.

The media briefing will be followed in the afternoon by an Educational Workshop where learners from primary schools from within the City of Cape Town as well as the Overstrand Municipality will be introduced to the projects and participate in activities.

Date: Tuesday 11 October
Time: 09:30
Venue: Meeting Room 2, 6th Floor, Podium Block, Civic Centre, Cape Town (and later moving to the Council Chamber for the Educational Workshop)

Day 3 – International Day for Disaster Reduction Seminar

A seminar for the International Day for Disaster Reduction will be held at the City’s Council Chamber. The Acting Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Nathi Mthethwa; City of Cape Town Executive Mayor, Alderman Patricia de Lille; National, Provincial and Local Government officials; representatives from neighbouring municipalities; a representative from the UNISDR; and relevant stakeholders will attend.

The main objective of the seminar is to propose a checklist of the ‘Ten Essentials for Making Cities Resilient’ which can be implemented by local municipalities. The checklist has been derived from five priorities of the Hyogo Framework for Action 2005-2015: Building the Resilience of Nations and Communities to Disasters – a key tool for implementing disaster reduction.

Date: Wednesday 12 October
Time: 08:30
Venue: Council Chamber, 6th Floor, Podium Block, Civic Centre, Cape Town
