Climate change adaptation workshop & symposium

NASA will assess and develop adaptation strategies at a Climate Change Adaptation Workshop to be held at Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, Calif., from Feb. 1 - 3, 2011. Media are invited to attend a follow-on symposium on the morning of Feb. 4, that will highlight workshop findings and capabilities Ames will employ to manage the impact of climate change.

Possible areas to be discussed include facility operations, such as storm water management and energy demands; natural resource management, such as tidal marsh species recovery and invasive species control; and the quality of life in the community, such as drinking water availability and wildfire risk.

Assets at Ames include the former Naval Air Station Moffett Field, California Air National Guard, U.S. Army, and Federal Emergency Management Agency. In addition, the NASA Research Park has taken advantage of extraordinary collaboration opportunities with industry, academia and nonprofits.

Guest speakers will include Cynthia Rosenzweig, a Nobel Prize winner from NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), Radley Horton from GISS, and Max Loewenstein, from the Earth Science Division at Ames. Two panel discussions, each followed by a Q&A, will address methods developed to scale down global climate data and make predictions over different time horizons for local planning. Additional speakers from the San Francisco Bay Area have been invited.

What: A forum for sharing information about NASA tools and resources that could be used by local communities in developing their own local and regional strategies to prepare for impacts from a changing climate.
