Manizales is becoming a good example of a comprehensive risk management model due to its remarkable advances in management, technical, institutional, and communitarian dimensions. Manizales has demonstrated that risk management is feasible, thanks to the convergence between technical and scientific work, political and administrative will, and acceptance and awareness of the community. FIU-DRR with the support from USAID/OFDA has promoted this one-week pasantia (workshop-practicum) in the city of Manizales for the students with the highest performance in the e-learning/e-training course of Comprehensive Risk Management offered by the CIMNE Institute of the Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña.

The pasantía is coordinated by the Instituto de Estudios Ambientales (IDEA) of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia-Sede Manizales, who provides theoretical and conceptual support along this initiative. Currently, IDEA performs as the “technical soul” of the municipal administration of Manizales in risk management, and its permanent support to the university has provided practical solutions to real problems.
