Geospatial data, GIS and remote sensing are of increasing importance in the humanitarian context and are currently experiencing increased use in the field of anticipatory humanitarian action. The Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict invites you to the free online course, 'Current approaches and GIS methods to support anticipatory humanitarian action'. The training will take place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 14-25 March 2022, from 09:00-13:00 each day.

In this advanced course, you have the opportunity to explore the application areas of geodata in humanitarian contexts. The training starts with an introduction to the concept of anticipatory humanitarian action and the link to geospatial data and related analyses. Using concrete examples, the use of raster data and analyses, accessibility analyses as well as local/community mapping approaches and their potential for the various areas of early action protocols are illustrated.

The training is facilitated jointly by the German Red Cross, the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre and the Heidelberg Institute for Geoinformation Technology. Since 2017, these institutions have worked successfully together to further refine the methodology of anticipatory approaches like forecast-based financing and to develop GIS solutions for the implementation of anticipatory humanitarian action.

The course is conducted under the umbrella of the academy for humanitarian action and can be credited for a certificate of advanced studies in the field 'Anticipatory humanitarian action'. The training is intended for all those who already have some experience with the use of GIS and geodata, as well as participants of our training course 'The use of geoinformation in (anticipatory) humanitarian action' held in January 2022.

You can find the agenda and register here. Thanks to the generous support of the German Federal Foreign Office, participation is free of charge. Given that the number of participants is limited, we kindly ask you to provide a short motivation statement upon registering and will inform you about final admission within two weeks after registration.

If you have any questions on the training or the certification scheme, please contact Sören Schneider at [email protected] or at +49 (0)234 32-27747.
