Introduction

The intricate relationship between sovereign debt and climate finance underscores the critical role that financial frameworks play in national development and environmental sustainability. Sovereign borrowing serves as a vital tool for nations to fuel economic growth, promote sustainable development, and address pressing challenges such as climate change. However, the confluence of mounting debt levels and the increasing impacts of climate change raises concerns about the ability of governments to navigate these challenges effectively. This workshop serves as a platform to explore the intricate connections between climate change, sovereign debt, vulnerability, and climate justice, reflecting a global commitment to innovative financial mechanisms and collaborative efforts in addressing these challenges.

Objectives

  • Explore interconnections: Scope the interconnections between sovereign debt, climate impacts, vulnerability, and scaling up climate action.
  • Assess capacity gaps: Evaluate existing capacity gaps, potential research priorities, and thematic focus areas.
  • Discuss financial system reforms: Deliberate on reform proposals for the global financial system and identify synergies with climate finance and loss and damage processes under the UNFCCC.
  • Synergise climate action and debt response: Identify opportunities to integrate climate action with debt response options and scale up climate action, focusing on solutions for the debt crisis in 2024 and beyond.
  • Increase stakeholder awareness: Raise awareness and understanding of the debt-climate nexus among key stakeholders.

Participants

This engaging workshop aims to convene a diverse group of stakeholders, with a primary focus on experts from financial and climate institutions, academia, government representatives, and civil society. The event will be hybrid, providing both in-person attendance in London (please contact [email protected]) and online registration.
