The aim of this conference is to share results in research and training initiatives with the focus on risk reduction in Africa. Risk reduction is a multi-disciplinary task that needs proper coordination and collaboration amongst all role players. Research and education forms the foundation of informed actions and the conference would provide a platform for researchers and academics in Africa to share their individual experiences and research results with each other.

The University of the Free State, with more than 150 graduate students in disaster management, the leading graduate program in disaster management in Africa would like to welcome you on campus during our conference.

The main themes are training, education and research for disaster risk reduction in Africa.

Conference goal is to give scientist and graduates the opportunity to share experiences, academic research, best practices and lessons learned with fellow disaster risk reduction practitioners. The emphasis of this conference is on training and education. This conference will also serve as an opportunity to link with key individuals and organizations with an interest in disaster risk reduction in Africa.

Call for papers: the Program Committee will review all presentations and selection will be based on the following criteria:
- Scientific originality and Research
- Topic & relevance to the conference theme and delegate base
- Focus on future trends and lessons learned (what worked AND what didn't) and recommended solutions to common issues
- Speaker's expertise, knowledge and ability to challenge delegates
- Presentation experience of speaker
- Research findings are welcome, provided the session is aimed at practitioners and balanced with sufficient practical information (i.e. 'here's how this can be applied to .....')
