Recognizing the relevance of land use planning as an effective tool for disaster risk reduction, the World Bank Institute (WBI), in cooperation with the Earthquakes and Megacities Initiative (EMI), has developed a specialized e-Learning course on Reducing Disaster Risk through Land Use Planning. The course is part of WBI’s distance learning program on natural disaster risk management offered globally.

This specialization course presents a general background on trends and experiences in mainstreaming disaster risk reduction objectives in land use and urban planning. It provides a discussion on detailed land use planning options and techniques and discusses the process of integrating disaster mitigation and local land use planning, and illustrates the benefits of this integrated approach using actual examples from both global and local perspectives.
