Against the backdrop of an increasing number of natural disasters across Asia-Pacific, ESCAP is bringing to high level officials from around the region together to discuss strategies for building resilience so that countries can better withstand, adapt to, and recover from these shocks.

During the third session of the Committee on Disaster Risk Reduction, which runs from 27-29 November at the United Nations Conference Centre (UNCC) in Bangkok , the Committee will discuss how recent events such as the devastating Super Typhoon Haiyan highlight the interlinked economic, social and environmental impacts of natural disasters and the need for equally comprehensive solutions.

These increasing shocks, which often occur simultaneously, call for multisectoral policy planning aimed at mainstreaming disaster risk reduction into development plans, poverty reduction frameworks and national budgets. The Committee will review the benefits and costs of mainstreaming disaster risk reduction and outlines strategies for building resilience to natural disasters, based on good practices across the region.
