Defra, with the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG), will conduct a national emergency flooding exercise in March 2011. It will test the arrangements across England and Wales to respond to severe, wide-area flooding.

The exercise will test the country's preparedness while also testing a number of other key recommendations from the Pitt Review and other recent flood reviews.

It will be one of the biggest exercises to take place nationally and the Environment Agency has been asked to plan and deliver it on behalf of Defra and WAG.

Exercise Watermark will put all our emergency plans to the test. It will use scenarios based on severe weather conditions including flooding from the sea, rivers, surface water and reservoirs.

There will be a central core exercise taking place nationally involving government departments. This will be supported by regional exercises and locally based community activities.
