Fiji: National disaster awareness week
The 2011 Fiji National Disaster Awareness Week (NDAW) was organized between 11-14 October. The dedication of the National Disaster Awareness Week was marked by the International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR) on October 13.
The National Disaster Awareness Week was held in Labasa and around other main centres of the Northern Division. Since the previous year the focus of NDAW has been on cities, towns and communities with the theme ‘Making Cities, Towns and Communities Resilient’.
The programme of NDAW included Iniatial Damage Assessment-course organized by the NDMO in collaboration with partners for the village chiefs in the Northern Division.
The NDAW also focused on children and youth. Oratory and other forms of competition to test how much children know about natural disasters were conducted during the awareness week.
The launch the NDAW as well as of the NDMO’s new website was held at the Ministry for Provincial Development on Tuesday 11 October 2011.
