Flood Snakes and Ladders – a community flood engagement event

Flood Snakes & Ladders is a game which draws on the experiences of children and young people, using quotations and images from our ESRC Children, Young People and Flooding research project. It gives participants first-hand insight into the experience of flooding from a child’s point of view, and is also a versatile tool for engagement in flood awareness, preparation and adaptation.

For this event we will take this game back to Hull, a city with huge experience of, and interest in flooding; its mitigation, adaptation and recovery.The event will bring together children and young people, teachers, emergency planners, practitioners involved in disaster recovery, local government flood risk and recovery teams and members of the local Living With Water initiative.

We will show how the game can also serve as an ‘ice-breaker’ for courses dealing with hazards and disaster management, emergency planning and understanding the social impacts of climate change. While flooding is the example used, the game also shines a light on wider issues of disaster preparedness, experience and recovery.
