Strengthening Disaster-Resilience in the Energy Sector

The world population is expected to increase from 7.8 billion currently to 9.7 billion in 2050, and cities around the world are facing chronic stresses such as demographic change and aging, the challenges of climate change, changes in the industrial infrastructure, economic crisis, and sudden shocks such as pandemics and natural hazards.

Cities are requires to a adapt to these challenges and recover form crises, and many cities are trying to introduce a resilience perspective into urban development, etc., and formulate and review comprehensive resilience strategies for moving toward a more sustainable and resilient society.

In addition, at COP26, the agreement was reached that clearly set a 1.5C target, and global action is needed to reduce carbon emissions and each city must accelerate effective actions towards decarbonization with strengthening resilience.

Against this backdrop, this session will focus on “Green Resilience (Building Resilient and Environmentally-Friendly City)” as a major theme, with particular emphasis on the importance of “Strengthening Disaster-Resilience in the Energy Sector”. The world is facing a variety of natural hazards, including disasters caused by global warming. Stable and continuous supply of electricity and heat are vital lifelines in the event of a disaster and strengthening urban resilience could greatly contribute to it, however, there are still many local policy issues to be addressed, including the need to secure a diverse range of energy sources. Our aim is to show how we are working towards sustainable and resilient cities, ensuring the safety and security of people who live in, and to share pathways to solve these issues through discussion and peer learning exercises.
