#IDDR2015 in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Tenerife, Canary Islands
The city and university will together celebrate International Day for Disaster Reduction in order to create awareness of the importance of disaster risk reduction actions. The Convento de Santo Domingo will host a set of participatory lectures on the role of traditional and local knowledge in complementing scientific studies on disaster risk management, and the importance of the participatory and community approaches to implement the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.
The opening and closure of the ceremony will be presided by the mayor and a high representative of the University of La Laguna.
With 153,000 inhabitants, San Cristóbal de La Laguna is the third most populated city in the Canary Islands. The city, which declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999, combines rural and traditional areas with an active urban life, and is home to the Canary Island’s oldest university, University of San Fernando de La Laguna.
Given their shared concern for risk reduction management and policies, the local government of La Laguna, in alliance with the university, joined the UNISDR’s global Making Cities Resilient campaign in April 2014. In July of the same year, the city made its self-assessment on resilience using the LG-SAT instrument provided by UNISDR.
