Indonesia symposium on disaster risk reduction and resilience

The purpose of this Symposium is to provide the opportunity for discussion on various levels on the issue of disaster risk reduction and resilience (DRR) in the Asia-Pacific region and especially in Indonesia. Network partners aim to formulate concrete proposals for research and interventions and to establish and/or strengthen partnerships with Indonesian institutions. Discussions will focus on a better understanding of the challenges of DRR in Indonesia, on setting achievable goals towards resilience, and on how to link DRR approach with climate change adaptation (CCA) and sustainable development. Sharing know-how, best practices and lessons learned will be central focus of the Symposium and the related workshops.

Events will include a pre-symposium workshop, cultural and disaster field site tours, and engagement opportunities with the following goals:

  • Highlight existing academic and community efforts to advance disaster resilience by combining science and indigenous culture;
  • Explore potential collaborations across national and regional borders and the whole of society to advance and sustain local solutions
  • Identify best practices and opportunities to translate knowledge into action across Indonesia and other similarly vulnerable locales

Keynote speakers

  • Muhammad Yusuf Kalla is the Chairman of the Indonesian Red Cross Society (Palang Merah Indonesia, PMI
  • Dr. Haryono Suyono served as head of the Indonesian National Family Planning Coordination Body (BKKBN) for 26 years
  • Dr. Maya Soetoro Ng is Professor of Education at the University of Hawai‘i.
  • Rezal Kusmaatmadja, co-founder Starling Resources

  • Urban Resilience: Understanding Cities to Address Disaster Risk
