As the climate continues to change, the social and economic costs of disasters continue to rise, particularly among poor communities. To address this, a much stronger focus is needed on poverty reduction addressing the underlying causes of vulnerability. National governments with the support of humanitarian and development actors will need to work at a greater scale, and leverage each other’s efforts to promote people-centered, holistic approaches to manage disaster and climate risk.

Within this context, a number of innovative approaches are being tested to scale up these innovations for greater impact. In this session Wetlands International will join the largest humanitarian organization, the Red Cross, and the largest development institution, the World Bank, through the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery, to share the findings of promising initiatives and show how the humanitarian and development gap is being bridged to strengthen community resilience at the necessary scale.
