Course description

The course will focus on building capacities in integrating gender concepts and methodologies in developing programs for climate change adaptation and mitigation. The course will also help understand the existing problems and concerns of men and women in the community as a result of climate change. It will also introduce to the participants practical tools they can use to mainstream gender in climate change mitigation and adaptation. The course will also help program and projects to identify interventions for climate change adaptation.

IIRR is an international development and training organization with over 50 years of grassroots experience working in people-centered, sustainable development. Gender Works leads initiatives in
gender, empowerment, and socio-economic development to promote equality, social justice and accountability with the goal of empowering individuals and communities, and strengthening
programs and institutions.

Course objectives

At the end of the course, the participants shall have:

  1. analyzed the link of climate change to sustainable development, capacities and vulnerabilities of men and women and resilience building;
  2. reviewed international legal instruments and tools and approaches to mainstream gender in climate change adaptation;
  3. explored evidences and good practices of gender-responsive climate change adaptation and mitigation; and
  4. developed practical skills in mainstreaming gender in climate change adaptation and mitigation projects.


Module 1. Understanding Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation

Session 1: Climate change and sustainable development
Session 2: Climate change and resilience building
Session 3: DRR Framework and linkages with climate change

Module 2. Understanding and Analyzing Gender Issues and Climate Change

Session 1: Overview of gender and development issues and concepts
Session 2: International instruments and obligations as framework for mainstreaming gender in climate change
Session 3: Capacities and risks of men and women in climate change
Session 4: Gender and climate change issues and opportunities in varying context: smallholders, fishers and forest dwellers

Module 3. Mainstreaming Gender in Adaptation and Mitigation Programs/projects

Session 1: Tools and approaches for mainstreaming gender in climate change adaptation

1.1 Gender analysis and planning frameworks
1.2 Integrating gender in capacity and risk assessments
- Women and men’s roles in adaptation and mitigation
- Women as agents of change in climate change adaptation and mitigation
- Risk management and empowerment of women

Session 2: Developing gender-responsive strategies in climate change adaptation and mitigation.
Session 3: Learning from the field: Experiences and good practices in gender mainstreaming to address climate change issues
Session 4: Monitoring and compliance

Module 4. Action Planning

Session 1: Preparation of action plan
Session 2: Presentation of action plan
Session 3: Revision and submission of action plan
