International day for disaster reduction - Francistown, Botswana

Botswana is organizing a series of activities to commemorate the International Disaster Reduction Day from 12-14th October 2010 in the city of Francistown. On this occasion a number of public awareness activities will be organized such as TV spots, Radio jingles, Posters and brochures circulation. Representatives from all the sectors will actively participate in these three day long events

On the 12th October a national level Disaster Preparedness workshop will be conducted. The workshop will be attended by representatives from District Disaster Management Committees, members of National Disaster Management Technical Committee and National Committee on Disaster Management ( DRR National Platform). In this workshop stakeholders will discuss impending disaster risks and response capacities in the country. A national level roadmap will be prepared to enhance the multi-sectoral disaster response mechanism in the county.

On the 13th October 2010 a simulation exercise will be conducted to assess preparedness and response capabilities of the multi sectoral District Disaster Management committee (DDMC) in Francistown. The DDMC will be evaluated on their capacity to respond to an air crash emergency. Evaluation of this exercise will contribute to the national emergency management planning.

The 14th October will mark a grand ceremony which will be officially addressed by the head of Disaster Risk Reduction National Platform, the Minister for Presidential Affairs and Public Administration, Ms Lesego Motsumi. The UN Resident Representative Ms Khin-Sandi will deliver the message on behalf of UN SG. The speeches in line with this year’s theme “Making Cities Resilient Is your city getting ready” and they will be broadcast live on national radio and national television. The Minister will also launch the National Disaster Risk Management Plan which aims to provide a national framework to implement DRR in the country. Various organizations, ministries and NGOs will also exhibit on how they manage disaster risks as per their mandate.
