International day for disaster risk reduction: 'Making communities resilient: my community is getting ready’ - Pohnpei state celebration
The Office of Environment and Emergency Management (OEEM) in partnership with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), the Pohnpei States Government, the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) and other agencies, are working together to host the IDDR 2011 celebration.
The focus of this celebration will be centred on the following objectives:
1. To provide the general public with relevant information regarding disaster risks management.
2. To strengthen networks and collaboration between partners working on DRM issues in the FSM.
3. To market the services provided by the DRM partners to the general public.
4. To provide further information on disaster preparedness to school children
The importance of celebrating IDDR in Pohnpei will be addressed in the official opening ceremony by key government officials and some DRM agency representatives. In addition to this, two local schools have been invited to the event and it is estimated that more than 160 school children will participate in a screening of a disaster preparedness video and demonstration. This will be the first International Day for Disaster Reduction to be officially recognized in the FSM with high level of engagement from DRM Partners and financial assistance from the IOM and the SPC.
