Background

Local Climate Solutions for Africa 2011 is a unique and accessible platform for African local leaders, their associations, national governments, scientists, technical experts, development partners, business, industry and civil society to engage on climate change challenges and solutions for Africa.

Local Climate Solutions for Africa 2011 takes place ahead of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) COP17 scheduled for later next year in South Africa.It provides a key opportunity to share global good practice and locally appropriate solutions and technologies towards accelerated climate action on the ground.

The Congress, convened by ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability, will prepare local champions and key stakeholders for the UNFCCC COP17, with a specific focus on mobilisation of resources and partnerships for local mitigation and adaptation to climate action.

Theme 1:
Local leadership, governance and planning for Africa in the
context of rapid global change

Theme 2:
Africa’s future cities - building resilience to climate change:
- energy security and access in a future low-carbon world
- water security, quality and access
- health, well-being and quality of urban life
- infrastructure and essential services
- local biodiversity and ecosystem based adaptation

Theme 3:
Africa’s communities - pivotal partners for locally sustainable
climate action and attainment of the MDG’s

Theme 4:
Climate change science and technology - advances and
challenges in a local context

Theme 5:
New opportunities for urban livelihoods – building Africa’s
green economy

Theme 6:
Resource mobilisation and new partnerships for accelerated
local climate action
