Managing the risks of extreme events and disasters to advance climate change adaptation

• January 24 the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is in Oslo to present the key findings in the latest report of the panel.

The event will open with a press conference with Dr Rajendra Pachauri, Chair of the IPCC, and Norway’s Minister of Environment and International Development, Mr Erik Solheim.

Dr Chris Field, Co-Chair of the IPCC Working Group II and several Coordinating Lead Authors of the report, including Dr Karen O’Brien from the University of Oslo, are amongst the key speakers.

• January 25 the conference will continue with two parallel sessions on how to use the findings in the report to strengthen disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation – in Norway and in development cooperation.

• The Session B addresses disaster risk reduction (DRR) in development cooperation:
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs invites to the parallel session with a focus on challenges and opportunities for development cooperation in a changing climate, and how to improve efforts on disaster risk management and climate change adaptation in vulnerable countries. This session will focus on different sectors/topics (health, food security, displacement), levels (local, national, regional) as well as groups to be included in disaster management processes (civil society, children and youth, women).

The conference is organized by the Climate and Pollution Agency in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Directorate for Civil Protection and Emergency Planning and the University of Oslo.
