The 10th Metropolis World Congress entitled “Cities in Transition” will be a unique opportunity to exchange and establish contacts between delegates and experts from around the world.

Why “Cities in Transition”? New city models have been established in the face of the financial downturn, the scarcity of petroleum and the depletion of the present growth model. So-called “cities in transition” are the sum of local movements targeted at mitigating the effects of a future crisis in relation to peak oil and climate change. These cities want to learn from their history to build a better future.

This paradigm of change affects all aspects of cities: the environment, the city’s growth model, the quality of life of the people, innovations – themes we have been analyzing and discussing in the Metropolis standing commissions for three years.

The Metropolis World Congress will also provide testimonies and recommendations from diverse cities that find themselves in different processes of transformation and transition, and the chance to learn first-hand about the innovative public policies implemented by Porto Alegre, capital of participative democracy.
