The Government of Ghana and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) are jointly organizing a workshop on Comprehensive Climate and Disaster Risk Management (CRM) to strengthen synergies between Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) in Ghana.

Workshop objective

The workshop aims to enhance the capacities of the government of Ghana in developing and implementing coherent and integrated plans and strategies for climate change adaptation (CCA) and disaster risk reduction (DRR).

It is going to facilitate a broader understanding of existing and relevant initiatives such as the ongoing development of the National Adaptation Plan, the national development policy or the Global Shield process in Ghana at the national and sub-national levels and focus on strengthening synergies and coherent implementation. Through the workshop, participants explore and highlight opportunities for synergistic planning and implementation between DRR, CCA and sustainable development as well as the integration of nature and biodiversity into relevant strategies and plans.

The workshop is held in partnership with the Ghana National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and engages multiple relevant other DRR, CCA and Biodiversity focal points in Ghana.

More specifically, the workshop aims at:

  • Convening key government representatives from ministries responsible for DRR, CCA and planning and finance, together with UN and international organizations, to share good practices, challenges and opportunities in integrated planning.
  • Sharing information and updates on existing coordination mechanisms, ongoing projects, risk data, and national climate and disaster finance tracking.
  • Motivating and empowering leadership and staff across levels to understand the benefits of CRM, integrated planning and inter-institutional cooperation and thereby strengthen decision-making and coordination.
  • Streamlining and advancing the process of integrated disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation planning and implementation.
  • Building the capacity of participants on how to develop/update/implement risk-informed and inclusive national plans/strategies e.g. National Adaptation Plans and Disaster Risk Management Strategies that encourage integrated climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction actions across all sectors at all levels.

Expected outcome

The workshop is expected to result in a joint roadmap for enhanced integrated disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation planning and implementation at the national level and ensuring alignment with sustainable development and biodiversity. Hereby the roadmap is a collaborative product that reflects the needs and priorities of the different sectors and stakeholders represented.

The workshop further builds capacities to enable stakeholders to develop and implement climate-risk-informed, data-driven national plans or integrated strategies across relevant line ministries and their integration within existing work in the country.

Target Audience

  • National DRR focal points (not limited to emergency response/preparedness officers)
  • Climate change or NAP focal points
  • Representatives from Ministries of planning and finance
  • Development partners/UN agencies / International organizations
