Understand how to suggest retrofitting measures for earthquake-affected vernacular buildings in Morocco

RedR UK is offering a free-of-charge, innovative, high-quality online training course aiming to provide technical responders of all disciplines in Morocco with an understanding of the strategies and approaches for communication and community engagement in humanitarian response, including the importance of two-way communication to build trust.

The facilitated module uses participatory methods and it is expected that learners will participate in discussions and activities in order to deepen their understanding of the concepts that are discussed. Participants will be offered opportunities to share relevant personal experiences and reflections to benefit their own and others' learning.

Module Aim

To equip engineers with an understanding of how to suggest retrofitting measures for earthquake-affected vernacular buildings in Morocco

Module Objectives

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Summarise humanitarian principles and standards, and implications for engineering practices. 
  • Describe the humanitarian context in Morocco and the challenges it presents for engineering projects 
  • Give examples of how engineering approaches can be adapted to the humanitarian context in Morocco.  
  • Explain how coordination and collaboration with a range of stakeholders (eg international actors, government entities, public service providers, etc) will help to deliver effective engineering solutions in Morocco. 
  • Identify humanitarian actors with whom they will coordinate and collaborate, and practical steps to facilitate this. 

Course Structure

The module comprises one live facilitated session of 120 minutes duration.

Participants will be required to watch a short video and complete pre-reading prior to the live session.

Who should attend?

The module is aimed at those responding to the Morocco earthquake humanitarian crisis and designed for practicing engineers and other technical earthquake responders with a basic understanding of earthquake engineering.

This course is offered for free; on a first come first served basis. We will be creating a waiting list, so please email us if the course is already full so we can keep you in mind if anybody drops out.

How to join?

The live online sessions are hosted on Zoom. We recommend joining via the Zoom app. Participants may join the training via a browser, although the browser offers limited access to some of the interactive features of the training. Participants will be expected to have a stable internet connection and to actively participate in all facilitated sessions.

If you complete registration and are no longer able to attend, please cancel your place through Eventbrite. This allows us to offer your place to someone else on the wait list.
