Southern Sierra Nevada change adaptation workshop
Public land managers and partners in the Southern Sierra Nevada Region are keenly aware that valued resources are at risk. Each entity has a compelling need to develop action plans that enable them to effectively respond to unprecedented and rapidly changing climatic, biogeophysical, and socio-economic conditions. To be successful in conserving resource values, we must look beyond our jurisdictional boundaries. This workshop is an opportunity to collectively move forward in our change adaptation capabilities using the latest information and tools.
How
Participants will address the following question: Given uncertain and rapidly changing conditions in the 21st century, how do we best achieve our shared conservation goals for the Southern Sierra Nevada Region? To do this, we will:
- Identify shared and unique values to be conserved,
- Review resource condition and vulnerability assessments ,
- Explore new response strategies and where they might be used, and
- Assess constraints and opportunities.
The workshop will incorporate new information, facilitated dialog, emerging technology, and decision-support tools.
Workshop products We will present and test a change adaptation planning framework based on natural and social values; provide syntheses and guidance on how to assess Southern Sierra Nevada natural resource values and vulnerabilities; report out on our exploration of the potential consequences of alternative management strategies; and capture information on place-based constraints on response strategies. We will identify a suite of shared natural resource conservation goals for the southern Sierra Nevada Region to inform collaborative and agency-specific change adaptation planning. A draft report will be provided to workshop participants for review and comment. A final report will made available on a public website.
