Storm surges represent a major type of natural hazard, frequently causing substantial losses of lives and economic damages. Besides climate change drivers, storm surges are exacerbated by anthropogenic forcing including intensive land and sea use along the river-coast continuum.

How can these changes be met now and in future? How can we overcome the fragmented discussion on this global topic, together with researchers, coastal users and planners?

LOICZ and GKSS, supported by numerous national and international partners, are organising an international congress in Hamburg, which deals with these and other questions.

The aim is to present both natural as well as social science perspectives, and to promote a holistic discussion in order to find interdisciplinary solutions.
