Training course on earthquake monitoring, tetonic deformation, seismic zoning methods and tsunami early warning
As a contribution to the ASEAN-EU Year of Science, Technology and Innovation 2012, an international training course on "Earthquake Monitoring, Tectonic Deformation, Seismic Zoning Methods and Tsunami Early Warning" will be held in Jakarta. The event continues the scientific and technological cooperation between the European Union and countries of the ASEAN Federation in the field of natural hazards mitigation, focusing on socially relevant issues that have been caused by disasters.
The goal of this training course is to the broaden knowledge, improve skills and enhance capabilities through ‘hands-on’ training in the use of the latest tools that have been developed to analyse, monitor and model earthquake and tsunami scenarios and their possible impacts. Secondly, participants will be trained how a monitoring system is operated that serves the national and international community. Thirdly and most importantly, it is intended to bring regional institutions together and strengthen the cooperation between practitioners, scientists and engineers. Participants will qualify to such a degree that they can independently operate earthquake monitoring systems, such as the GFZ developed SeisComP3 in their home countries.
The training course will advance international cooperation between the EU and ASEAN in the field of seismology. Community activities that started in recent years between Germany and the countries bordering the Indian Ocean on earthquake monitoring and tsunami early warning will continue. In the framework of scientific and technological cooperation between the Federal Republic of Germany and the Republic of Indonesia, far-reaching projects have been implemented, such as GITEWS (www.gitews.de) and PROTECTS (http://www.gitews.de/index.php?id=87).
The ASEAN training course is another excellent opportunity to demonstrate how science and technology projects dealing with natural disasters can contribute with meaningful results that have an impact on socially relevant issues. In this context, the international training course serves as a welcome contribution to the ‘ASEAN-EU Year of Science, Technology and Innovation 2012’ by further developing and intensifying the ties between the European Union and countries of the ASEAN Federation member states.
