Understanding cascading and systemic risks: Learnings from COVID-19
- English
In an increasingly interconnected world, COVID-19 has been a dramatic reminder of the complex and systemic nature of risks. Over the past two years, the world has witnessed how COVID-19, often exacerbated by the concurrence of natural hazards, has led to devastating direct and cascading impacts on health, social, economic and financial systems across sectors, scales and countries. While dynamic and systemic risks are gaining attention in research and policy, complex interconnected risks are scantily understood.
This webinar will discuss how the pandemic exacerbated existing vulnerabilities and risks in specific contexts (incl. urban and humanitarian settings) and what actions were taken to avert, minimize and address risks. Further, it will present recommendations for prevention and risk management as well as future research needs.
