Workshop on climate change, cryosphere, habitat and changing livelihood pattern of Ladakh region: An interdisciplinary approach towards developing adaptive strategies
Among the policy makers and academia, it is an accepted fact that the climate change will have long term impact on the communities and their habitat. This would in turn force the communities to reorganize their everyday life, more specifically the livelihood patterns. Growing number of research now testify that the communities, species and eco-systems are already responding to these changes in one form or another. It is a well accepted fact that the mountain communities are more vulnerable to the impact of climate change. Ladakh region has a unique place in the Indian Himalaya as water and oxygen, both central to the existence of life forms is a scarce resource here. Glacial streams are the life line of the area and the settlements are constraint along the banks of these streams at the foothills.
Objectives and scope
The workshop aimed to develop interdisciplinary synergy between climate change- cryospheric science- water resources & social sciences among the active researchers and budding research scholars for developing appropriate adaptive strategies to the climate change response of the region. The focus will be on climate change impact on water resources and changing habitat and livelihood pattern of the people of the Ladakh cold- arid system. The workshop is structured around 08 lead clusters and a synthesis cluster. Leading experts from relevant fields will lead workshop activities of the following clusters.
- Snow, glaciers and water resources
- Climate change of cold-arid systems and future projections
- Climate change and water: socio-economic and cultural aspects including Ladakhi Nomads.
- Climate change and water: impact on rural livelihood
- Climate change and water: impact on ecology and wetlands
- Climate change and water: impact of tourism
- Climate change and water: impact on demography and urbanization
- Climate change and waterborne disasters and adaptation strategies
- Synthesis: adaptation strategies and resource management.
