World Tsunami Awareness Day 2017 - Philippines
In December 2015, the United Nations General Assembly designated 5 November as World Tsunami Awareness Day to promote a global culture of tsunami awareness. For the second year in a row, the World Tsunami Awareness Day will align with the International Day for Disaster Reduction and the "Sendai Seven Campaign" and will focus in 2017 on Target B of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction which aims at reducing the number of affected people globally by disasters.

Theme: “Raising awareness on the risk of tsunamis around the world.”
The Philippines, through the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) will engage in a week-long observance of the WTAD 2017, in coordination with the different national government agencies, specifically the Department of Education (DepEd) , Office of Civil Defense (OCD) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and Local Government Unit of Zambales Province. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has also signified interest to collaborate with PHIVOLCS in this observance.
Main activities
- 6-9 November: Guided exhibit, film showing, JICA sharing & lessons learned
- PHIVOLCS will put up a special exhibit for students and teachers for a week-long observance of WTAD, and as part of information, education and communication program of PHIVOLCS.
- Participants: Junior and Senior High school students and teachers, DRRM officers (LGU Zambales Province and Iba), DOST, OCD, DepEd, Media
- 7, 9 November: Conduct of Annual Teachers’ Training on Communicating Earthquake and Tsunami Hazards
- Participants: Teachers from District of Subic, Division of Zambales
