The Atoll Water Security Workshop had participants from the Cook Islands, Tuvalu, Tokelau, the Marshall Islands, and Kiribati discussing water security challenges and some of the solutions that are already being applied at national and community level. Sub-regional collaboration in tackling common challenges is highlighted as valuable, and can help dealing with drought.

A three-year project to reduce Pacific nations’ vulnerability to the effects of climate change has just wrapped up after being successfully implemented in eight Pacific countries. The project helped small island communities to better understand local weather and climate information, and to build resilience towards changing weather patterns.

The Asian Development Bank has provided the Cook Islands with disaster contingent financing through the innovative use of policy-based lending. The programme will support the Cook Islands' National Sustainable Development Plan in the areas of policy strengthening and institutional arrangements for disaster risk management, building resilient infrastructure and expanding disaster risk financing.

Tautu village in Aitutaki, Cook Islands has completed a disaster and climate resilience pilot project. Outcomes include a plan designed with input from the community with guidance on actions to take in case of an emergency weather hazard, construction of a tsunami evacuation centre, provision of fire and drought monitoring; wind speed signs; and a new emergency siren.
