To assess the climate-related risks and vulnerabilities of airports and seaports, the lifeline of island economies, UNCTAD developed a methodology recently put to the test in the Caribbean nations of Jamaica and Saint Lucia, as part of a three-year project looking at the impact of climate on coastal transport infrastructure in the region.

Islands in the Caribbean Sea with populations comparable to mid-sized cities are increasingly seeking guidance from urban leaders as they are dealing with problems on a similar scale. The resemblance gives small islands access to new strategies by cities, such as high-tech permeable pavements, vegetation-based flood prevention measures and shifts away from fossil fuels.

Insurance policies developed by Munich Climate Insurance Initiative are available on St. Lucia and sold by local insurance companies. They are developed to provide a grassroots supplement to national level insurance policies in the storm-afflicted Caribbean.
