According to WHO, for the first time doctors have been given the go-ahead to deploy experimental drugs for all patients in an Ebola outbreak. The DRC has approved five experimental treatments among ongoing discussions between WHO, Doctors Without Borders, and the Congolese government to fine-tune the details on which drugs will be used as a first-line of defence.

Financing has been extended to cover the Caribbean and West African regions. The initiative is improving early warning systems to protect the most vulnerable populations in LDCs and SIDS.

Since the last Disease Outbreak News on 30 May 2018, two additional cases have been laboratory confirmed for Ebola virus disease (EVD) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. While confirmed Ebola cases continue to rise, the global risk level remains low. However, national and regional risk are very high and high, respectively, with preparedness activities being undertaken.

The FAO is supporting ten projects across Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Eastern Europe and South America to lay the groundwork for climate-resilient adaptation initiatives, funded by the Green Climate Fund's (GCF) Readiness Programme. One of the overall aims is to support countries in adapting their agriculture and food security systems to the effects of climate change.

The ring vaccination being used to mitigate the spread of Ebola in the DRC is modeled after a similar method that was used in Guinea in 2015, which proved to be very effective in containing the disease. This technique is yielding similar results, providing hope to high-risk communities that relief is imminent.

The World Bank Group’s Pandemic Emergency Financing Facility (PEF) has made its first-ever financial commitment, approving a $12 million grant towards the current Ebola response in the DRC. The grant will support the surge in activities of the DRC Government and international responders outlined under the approved three-month $56.8 million Ebola response plan.

A "ring vaccine" technique is being used to implement 8,000 Ebola vaccines in the DRC, but critics warn that identifying who is at risk of infection is easier when using community monitoring, which involves using forehead thermometers in common spaces to test who may be sick.
