The Adaptation Research Alliance (ARA) has awarded 30 Global South projects as part of its Grassroots Action Research Micro-grants. The projects will receive up to GBP 15,000 to carry out inclusive, locally-led action research for identifying needs and opportunities for building resilience.

“The ARA’s Grassroots Action Research Micro-grants kickstart or strengthen Global South relationships that represent all voices and knowledge types in exploring equitable approaches for adapting to climate change,” says ARA Micro-grant Lead Sydney Church.

The awarded projects are based in 22 countries from the Global South, including Argentina, Bangladesh, Haiti, Kenya, the Philippines, Somalia, India, and Uruguay. They address a variety of climate adaptation issues identified as urgent by local communities including health, coastal erosion, drought, urban planning, and food security.

“With these awardees, we support locally-led projects committed to fostering relationships between local government, researchers, practitioners, and other stakeholders, and which work within a framework of gender and social inclusivity,” Church says.

The Grassroots Action Research Micro-grants are part of a paradigm shift in adaptation research championed by the ARA. A coalition committed to scaling up Research for Impact on climate adaptation, the ARA is made up of 200 leading researchers, funders, policymakers, development bodies and community-based organisations from the international adaptation community.

“Innovative funding schemes like the micro-grants are essential to ensure we generate targeted evidence on how to adapt alongside the communities affected by climate change, and with the urgency demanded by science,” says ARA Steering Board member Professor Saleemul Huq, Director of the International Centre for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD).
