Bangladesh: 'Development and disasters - Monkey and oily bamboo'

M. Mizanur Rahman writes in his editorial on poverty and disaster risk reduction: 'the situation of Bangladesh has become like the monkey who climbs the bamboo after a certain time and with some struggle, and then it falls down again as the bamboo is oily.'

He asserts that 'Until a few decades ago, disasters were viewed as one of the events responded to by governments and relief agencies without taking into account the social and economic implications and causes of these events. But now it is gradually changing for increasing consciousness about the multiple implications caused by disasters.'
