Bangladesh is one of the few countries likely to meet almost all of the Millennium Development Goals. The country is still very poor, but it has made spectacular progress, writes Marianne Scholte for the Dhaka Tribune.
Highlighting the country's disaster risk reduction system, she reports that many of the 2,000 development NGOs in Bangladesh contribute to its success.
The report highlights progress and provides a bit of persepctive: before the 2007 cyclone Sidr, some 3.5 million people were evacuated and 3,500 killed; However, a cyclone of similar strength had claimed 138,000 lives in 1991 and the region’s most devastating storm of all times left half a million dead in 1970.
