"Everyone has a role to play in reducing disaster risk," says Ian King, Disaster Risk Reduction Programme Manager with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for Barbados and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), stating that a comprehensive disaster risk reduction approach requires both effective and committed communities as well as individuals in order to be realised.

In the Barbados Advocate, he outlined that such a comprehensive disaster risk reduction approach was a critical component of sustainable and human development, and required commitment, resources and sound information at all levels of the national systems.
