Barbados - Monica Zaccarelli of the Pan-American Health Organization/WHO discloses the result of a study conducted in the hospitals of the Caribbean region. The Hospital Safety Index provides a snapshot of the probability that a hospital or health facility will continue to function in emergency situations, based on structural, nonstructural and functional factors. The study was conducted during April and May 2008 and urges the region to invest in making hospitals safer.
According to Zaccarelli, Disaster Risk Reduction adviser in the Caribbean, those hospitals showing potential risk in case of disaster can carry out the suggestions made in the study. Monica Zuccarelli points out that most interventions don't require new construction and are financially feasible.
