Mandalay City Development Committee (MCDC) and the Relief and Resettlement Department (RRD) of Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement (MSWRR) with the support from United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, organized a workshop to formulate Risk Reduction Action Plan at Swan Hotel, Mandalay on March 28th and 29th, 2013.

Mandalay, former Royal Capital and second largest city in Myanmar with an estimated population of 963,350 (2009), is a major economic hub for the region. The city also lies along the Sagaing fault, an active strike-slip fault which runs north to south of the country and the city has experienced significant earthquakes in the past. The two-day workshop was held to find out the possible means in order to address existing and future risk due to earthquakes.

The workshop identified key areas/sectors for earthquake risk reduction (existing and planned), response preparedness and recovery planning in Mandalay. MCDC and RRD with the technical support from UN-HABITAT and partners will further consult with respective stakeholders to refine and detail, doable and time-bound action plan for risk reduction in Mandalay. The workshop was organized as part of Mandalay City Earthquake Risk Reduction Programme, under the overarching Memorandum of Understanding on ‘‘Myanmar Comprehensive Disaster Risk Reduction Programme” between UN-Habitat and RRD.

The workshop brought together a total of 60 participants from MCDC, Regional Government, professional bodies, schools, academic institutions, development partners, disaster risk reduction professionals and international experts. In addition, Geohazards International (GHI) and Nepal Society for Earthquake Technology (NSET) shared similar experiences from the region and also guided the action planning process along with UN-HABITAT.
