The district of Ampara at the East coast of Sri Lanka is very vulnerable to the repeatedly occurrences of natural hazards.

Almost every year, heavy monsoon rains cause large-scale flooding which seriously endanger the livelihood of the people living in the affected area.

Moreover, cyclones which regularly devastate the coastal areas of the district have similar effects. So far, the capacities of the communities to respond to and cope with the effects of these natural disasters are limited.

Thanks to a contribution made by the Federal Foreign Office of Germany, the German Red Cross in close cooperation with the Sri Lankan Red Cross has started a project in six communities in Ampara district to enhance the capacities of these communities to prepare for and respond to an emergency or a nature hazard.

The Federal Foreign Office for the Federal Republic of Germany, is contributing Euro 136.994 to the total project cost of Euro 152.160. The project runs for 14 ½ months between October 2009 and December 2010.
