India: Preparedness in the best way to reduce impact of disasters

"Creating awareness and involving everyone will help to minimize the loss of lives and reduce the impact of disasters," said Tarun Gogoi, Chief Minister of Assam, India, emphasizing the need for involving teachers and NGO's in the disaster management preparedness. As IBNLive reported, Mr Gogoi called for a holistic approach towards disaster management, and he pointed out that pre-disaster preparedness was the best way to reduce risk and vulnerability.

Talking at the Experience Sharing Workshop organised by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority with the Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority, he stated: "We have to learn from Gujarat and make use of their experiences and knowledge to face any exigency in the event of an earthquake".
