Indonesia: Vertical shelters become option in tsunami areas

The earthquake and tsunami threat that hit the western coast of Sumatra last week has prompted preparatory authorities to propose building vertical safety shelters in tsunami-prone areas, reports the Jakarta Globe.

“The president said that if there is a need for additional equipment, such as for the early warning system, then if should be ascertained because this [system] is important,” presidential spokesman Julian Aldrin Pasha said. According to the report, he added that the president had ordered the two agencies to comprehensively study what equipment is needed for the tsunami early warning system.
