International day for disaster reduction observed across Myanmar

Nay Pyi Taw - The International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR) was observed yesterday in Nay Pyi Taw and all capitals of states and regions in Myanmar. This year’s focus was on including persons with disabilities in disaster resilience initiatives and policy planning. Persons living with disabilities, though among the most excluded in society, can make valuable contributions to help reduce the risk of disasters.

Dr. Sai Mauk Kham, Vice President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar joined the national event to commemorate the IDDR organised at the Myanmar International Conventional Centre in Nay Pyi Taw today. Representatives from the government ministries, diplomats, donors, local and international NGOs and UN agencies participated in the event.

The national event was organised by the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement (MSWRR) and United Nations with support from Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group, which is chaired by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Winners of the national level open-category essay competition for IDDR commemoration received prizes at the event. Painting and essay competitions were also organised for students in each state and region to mark the Day. The competitions were organised by MSWRR and the Ministry of Education with support from UNDP.

UNDP Country Director in Myanmar Mr. Toily Kurbanov joined the IDDR commemoration ceremony in Myitkyina, capital of Kachin State, and delivered the UN Secretary General’s message on IDDR. Mr. Kurbanov also presented prizes to the winners of the painting and essay competition for IDDR.

DawLatLat Aye, a programme team leader in UNDP Myanmar, said events to mark the Day remain critical to raise awareness on disaster risk reduction.

“In Myanmar, support to disaster risk reduction is one focus area under the UNDP’s new country programme for 2013-2015. UNDP is committed to providing support for strengthening technical and functional capacities for disaster management in Myanmar,” she said.

The International Day of Disaster Risk Reduction is observed globally on October 13.
