The Adaptation Fund Board (AFB) gave the go-ahead and earmarked US$9.995 million for the implementation of a programme designed to strengthen the Jamaica's capacity to deal with climate change. This programme has three objectives: (i) increasing the climate resilience of the Negril coastline; (ii) enhancing the climate resilience of the agriculture sector by improving water and land management in select communities; and (iii) improving institutional and local level capacity for sustainable management of the natural resources in disaster risk reduction in the targeted vulnerable areas.

"This is the first of what we hope will be a number of programmes from which we hope to benefit towards the adaptation to climate change (effort)," said Hopeton Peterson, manager for sustainable development and regional planning with the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ) to the Observer.
