While Chile prepares for the second anniversary of its own devastating earthquake and tsunami, Chilean political scientist and sociologist Patricio Navia went to Japan to learn how the country has moved forward in its reconstruction efforts. He analyses for Buenos Aires Herald the lessons Latin American countries could learn from Japan. He highlights a big contrast between Japan and Chile in the level of trust people have in their institutions, ranging from official tsunami warnings to the government response and reconstruction process following the earthquake and tsunami, as well as the painful yet necessary structural reforms undertaken.
